Mills looks to lead Team Ontario to National Championship

2016-03-10

Head Coach Glen Mills gets Gatoraide bath after Bronze Medal win in 2013.

When a change was needed in the Team Ontario Program in 2013, OFA looked to Coach Glen Mills. Since then, Ontario has not been disappointed bringing home a medal the past three years, including a National Championship in 2014.

In 2013, the Ontario Football Alliance (OFA) decided a change was needed to its Canada Cup Program. “The change was simple; we wanted to win.” said Ontario Football Alliance Executive Director, Tina Turner. From 2010-2012, Team Ontario would send two teams to the Football Canada Cup, East and West. During those three years, Ontario was only able to win one medal, a Bronze in 2012 from Team Ontario West.

To begin the change, the OFA made the move to 1 team. “Putting the Top 40 players from Ontario on the same team gives us the best possible chance to complete our goal by winning the Gold Medal” said Ontario Football Alliance President, Ian Smith.

The final change was selecting a Head Coach. The OFA decided to go with a familiar face and a proven winner in Glen Mills from the Essex Ravens. Mills had been an Assistant Coach with Team Ontario when it won National Championships in 2002, 2003, & 2004. As well, leading the Essex Ravens to 3 Provincial Championships wins in 1998, 2002, & 2010. Mills was a proven winner and gave Ontario its best chance at bringing the Gold Medal home.

Since Mills has taken over, Ontario has won a medal in the past 3 Football Canada Cup’s. Year 1, Ontario defeated Saskatchewan and won a Bronze Medal in Moncton, New Brunswick. Year 2, Ontario defeated the defending Gold Medalist Quebec in the semis, then Saskatchewan in their home province to win its first National Championship in a decade. Finally in year 3, Mills once again led Team Ontario to the Gold Medal game only to fall to Quebec. Along with his success with Team Ontario, Mills would lead the Essex Ravens to a 2015 Provincial Championship, along with leading Team Canada to a 2015 International Bowl victory.

Ontario will look to re-load and bring home the Gold Medal under Coach Mills leadership as they will once again compete in the 2016 Football Canada Cup, held in Winnipeg, Manitoba; July 10th – 16th. Tryout dates and Registration Links can be found below.
